“The Cruise Boom is happening in beautiful places all over the world. Everybody is struggling with it. A lot of people don’t know how to have hope or how to guide it. I think everyone should see how Sitka was preparing for it and some of the questions, answers and fears. The film documents a critical point in time before the cruise industry changed Sitka in ways Sitkans don't want it to be changed.``

Our goal
Cruise Boom, the documentary, will be released for a public broadcast on September 14, 2024 and we didn’t cover all expenses to cover the costs! Our goal was to raise $15,000 by June 23rd and we made it to 12K!
What does that mean?
An estimated 1.5 to 3 million people will watch the film via broadcast on 300 stations across the country. It could be more! The film will also be on the PBS app that plays on all your devices! Each month, more than 36 million people watch their local PBS stations & more than 16 million viewers use the PBS’s site alone.
Why does this matter?
Cruise Boom is a film about communities thinking about their relationship to tourism, and to boom and bust economies. Filmed over a a year and half, the documentary asks questions, including: how do we share the places we love and not destroy them? How do we support local economies and work with global industries?
We’ve been screening the film in coastal communities, sharing it in classrooms with lots of discussion and we want to reach out to a wider audience. Even with the ever changing streaming options out there, PBS remains a trusted source for education and information!
What? It costs to broadcast a film?
Contrary to what might make sense, indie filmmakers and programs from Masterpiece Theater to NOVA seek underwriting/support to get programs on air. There are costs for technical preparation, FCC approved captions, insurance, clearance and communicating with stations around the country! We have to lock the credits and have a professional editor do the tech evaluation and packaging for a fall broadcast in July!
Any size donations help.
If you give $75 or more, you can get a 14 Miles T-shirt. If you give $150 or more, you end up in the credits of the film before it goes to PBS (see below).
When you make a film and involve lots of other people’s time and energy in the process, you don't just create it to sit on a hard drive or be the end of the story: you want it to generate reflection and conversation.
